Scholarship application checklist

Most scholarship applications fail for boring reasons — a missing transcript, an unsigned form, a recommendation request sent two days before the deadline. This checklist is meant to be reused for every scholarship you apply to, so the boring parts don't sink an otherwise strong application.

Before you start

  • Re-read the eligibility requirements on the official source.
  • Confirm the deadline and the time zone it's listed in.
  • Confirm the award amount and what it can be used for.
  • Read the full list of required documents before you start writing.
  • Check whether the FAFSA or any state aid form is required first.

Documents to have ready

  • Official or unofficial transcripts (current and final).
  • Test scores, if required.
  • Proof of enrollment or acceptance letter.
  • FAFSA Student Aid Report (if relevant).
  • Resume / activity list.
  • Portfolio or work samples, if relevant to your field.
  • Government-issued ID or proof of residency, if asked.

Essays

  • Match each essay to the actual prompt — do not reuse an old essay that almost fits.
  • Stay under the word or character limit.
  • Open with a specific, concrete moment, not a generic statement.
  • Have someone else read every essay before you submit.
  • Save copies of every essay so you can adapt them for future applications.

Recommendations

  • Ask recommenders at least 3 weeks before the deadline.
  • Give them the scholarship name, deadline, submission link, your resume, and a short note on why you're applying.
  • Follow up politely one week before the deadline.
  • Thank them after submission, and let them know the outcome.

Before you submit

  • Re-check your name, contact details, and school information.
  • Re-check uploaded file names — “final_final_v3.pdf” is fine; “Untitled.pdf” is not.
  • Make sure every required field is filled in.
  • Save a PDF copy of the completed application for your records.
  • Submit at least 24 hours before the deadline if you can — portals get slow at the last minute.

After you submit

  • Keep the confirmation email.
  • Mark the decision date on your calendar.
  • Move the scholarship to “Applied” in your saved list.
  • Watch your inbox (including spam) around the decision date.
